There is no legal requirement when entering into a Civil Partnership for either partner to change their surname. However, after a Civil Partnership ceremony, most couples choose to use the same surname.

The Civil Partnership Certificate enables one partner to change their surname to the other partner’s surname, without the need for a Deed Poll. Most UK departments and organisations will accept the certificate as sufficient documentary evidence, and your partner will be able to have their records amended accordingly. However, some banks and utility companies will not accept the Civil Partnership Certificate and will only change their records, when provided with a Deed Poll. For this reason, some couples may choose to use a Deed Poll, which enables them to have greater freedom in the name they choose to sahre.

Double-Barrelling both Surnames

As a couple, you may feel you would rather double barrel your surnames than decide to use one partners. Some organisations will accept the Civil Partnership Certificate as proof of the new double-barrelled surname, whilst other organisations will reject this, and require a Deed Poll. For this reason some partners decide to change one of their surnames to the new double-barrelled surname before the ceremony, through the use of a Deed Poll. This way both partners will be able to update all their records into the new surname without the need for two Deeds Poll, as the double-barrelled surname will be shown on the Civil Partnership Certificate.

A new surname

If a couple decide to choose an entirely new surname or ‘mesh’ their surnames then a Deed Poll document would be required. Couples may decide to do this if they don’t like either surname or feel they wish to create a new name, by ‘meshing’ both surnames together.

Adopting a Surname as a Middle Name

A couple may choose to keep both partners’ surnames, by adopting one as the middle name for both partners and the other as the surname for both partners.  For example if GEORGE WILLIAMS had a Civil Partnership with ANDREW DAVID then they would become GEORGE DAVID WILLIAMS and ANDREW DAVID WILLIAMS. This change would need to be completed by Deed Poll, in order for all records and documents to be updated accordingly.

Title Change

It is possible to change your title when entering into a Civil Partnership, and if changing your name by Deed Poll this can be incorporated into the Deed Poll document.
