If you are separated and awaiting divorcee proceedings, you are can still change your surname. You may not wish to wait for the Decree Absolute to be issued before you revert to your maiden name or choose a new surname.

A Deed Poll will enable you to change from your married surname and subsequently have your records updated into your new name. You may also wish to change your title through Deed Poll, perhaps from Mrs to Ms or Miss. It is easier to complete a title change at the same time as applying for your change of surname or forename. Some women also choose to change their middle name, add a new middle name or drop an existing middle name. All these changes can be done though one Deed Poll document which will enable you to update all your records.

If you have any children, you may decide that you want to change their surname as well. It could be you choose to keep their fatherís surname and double barrel it with your maiden name. This way they are maintaining their fatherís surname but also have your maiden name. In order for you to change your childís name everyone with parental responsibility must consent to the name change.

The Deed Poll will be accepted by the UK Passport Service and all other UK departments, organisations and services. Extra copies of the Deed Poll document can be ordered, enabling you to get records updated into your new name more promptly.

If your divorcee proceedings have already begun, then you will need to inform all concerned of your name change. However, this will not affect the divorce proceedings, and will just mean the paperwork is completed in your maiden name or your new surname.
