Name Change by Statutory Declaration

Time Saving Tip: The quickest and easiest way to change your name is to Apply For Your Deed Poll Online.

A Statutory Declaration is a formal document, which is sworn as an oath in the presence of either a solicitor or magistrate. A Statutory Declaration declares that you will abandon your former name and adopt a new name from then onwards.

In the UK the most widely used document as evidence of a change of name is a Deed Poll. However, if you are living abroad or are not a British Citizen you may be asked to produce a Statutory Declaration to change over some of your documents. It is advisable you check with your embassy and find out if there are any special requirements for getting your passport updated into your new name.

A solicitor usually draws up a Statutory Declaration and you will be charged a fee to have it drafted and sworn in.  It is advisable to obtain more than one copy of the statutory declaration.

Some people use a Statutory Declaration to change their name but it is advised that you firstly check with organisations to this if this document will be accepted. Not all financial institutions are happy to accept a Statutory Declaration and may require a Deed Poll.

It is not usually necessary to use a Statutory Declaration to change your name, and a Deed Poll will suffice and enable you to change over all your records into your new name. If you are able to use a Deed Poll, the name change process is likely to be less costly and time consuming.
