Name Change for Widows

Time Saving Tip: The quickest and easiest way to change your name is to Apply For Your Deed Poll Online.

A widow can usually change back to her maiden name without the need for a Deed Poll. The Marriage Certificate and husband’s Death Certificate will normally be sufficient evidence to get any records changed over. However, in circumstances where these certificates are not accepted a Deed Poll will need to be used, which is guaranteed to enable the women to get all her documents in the UK changed over.

If you decide to adopt a new surname rather than using your maiden name, then a Deed Poll would be required. It is also possible to change your first name and add or omit a middle name, when applying for your Deed Poll. It might be that your first name is difficult to spell or that you have always wanted a particular name as your middle name.

You may decide to continue using your deceased husband’s surname and instead choose a new forename or middle name. If you decide to change your title this can also be done when you apply for your change of name.

The Deed Poll document will be accepted by all UK departments, companies and organisations as proof of your name change.
