Marriage/Civil Partnership/Divorce
You can choose to change your name after your wedding or civil partnership. Some people choose to incorporate both surnames. Your marriage or civil partnership certificate is recognised as official proof of your name change. You do not need to do anything other than update the relevant bodies (a list of who to inform is below).
Many people wish to return to their pre-married name after a separation or divorce, which is understandable. How you go about this will depend on a number of things, i.e. how did you register your name change? Is your divorce complete? You may need to follow the procedure you went through when initially changing the name.
Gender Reassignment/Gender Fluid
Transgender people do not have to transition before changing their name – they can change it at any point. This offers many people a chance to live as the person they want to be and have it officially recognised. You do not require any certification to do this. You can change your name in Scotland using a statutory declaration created and witnessed by a justice of the peace or a notary public. This is then used as official documentation for your name change. You should contact a legal professional if you require assistance with this process.
