Name Change for Transgender and Non-Binary People
Transgender and Non-Binary people can very easily change names. Transgender people are people who were designated as one gender at birth, but do not identify with that gender. Non-Binary people either do not identify as any gender, identify as more than one gender, move between genders, or identify as a third gender.

For example, a Transgender person may have a traditionally male anatomy, but mentally and emotionally identify as a female. They can seek to be recognized as their correct gender by altering their appearance, taking hormones, or electing to undergo gender affirming surgeries.

Many Transgender and Non-Binary people decide to change their name to represent their true gender whether or not they pursue surgery. A name change helps contribute to the concept of a fresh start. Transgender and Non-Binary people can change their name change by Deed Poll to whatever they choose. Some people only change their forenames while others also change their surnames. In addition to the name change, a title change can be done simultaneously. For example, upon changing names from Tom to Angela, a person can also change their title from Mr to Miss/Mrs/Ms.
Non-Binary people will be happy to know that in England the non-gendered title of Mx is recognized for legal use. However, the government is not yet recognizing gender beyond male or female.
Upon receipt of the Deed Poll document it must be signed in the presence of a suitable witness. It can then be used to update all official records to show the persons new name.
What Does a Change in Names Mean?
It is important to remember that when a person who is Transgender or Non-Binary changes names, they are not changing their gender. But a name change for Transgender person does help demonstrate that you are living in your affirmed gender. The only way to officially change your gender is by obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate from the Gender Recognition Panel.
In order to change the name and gender on your passport, you must first obtain a gender recognition certificate. This should then be sent off to the Identity and Passport Service along with your Deed Poll. Your gender and name will be altered accordingly.
