Documentary Evidence
Documentary Evidence is now required for a change of name, but it used to be the case that it was relatively simple to change your name by usage (simply using a new name).
Ready to change your name?
Government departments such as the Identity and Passport Service or the DVLA will only recognise a change of name upon the receipt of documentary evidence that a change of name has taken place. There are several types of documents that are accepted as official documentary evidence.
Types of Documentary Evidence
The following documents can be used as evidence:
- Marriage Certificate
- Civil Partnership Certificate
- Decree Absolute Certificate
- Adoption Certificate
- Death Certificate
If you do not have any of the above documents, you will need to apply for a Deed Poll before you can get your documents such as your passport or driving license reissued in your new name. You will also be unable to change your bank or building society details without some form of documentary evidence.
