Name Change Upon Separation; what does this mean for your children?
If you have any children, you may decide that you want to change their surname as well. It could be you choose to keep their father’s surname and double-barrel it with your maiden name. This way they are maintaining their father’s surname but also have your maiden name. In order for you to change your child’s name, everyone with parental responsibility must consent to the name change.
The Deed Poll will be accepted by the UK Passport Service and all other UK departments, organisations, and services. Extra copies of the Deed Poll document can be ordered, enabling you to get records updated into your new name more promptly.
If you decided to go ahead with a name change upon separation and divorce proceedings have already begun, then you will need to inform all concerned of your name change. However, this will not affect the divorce proceedings and will just mean the paperwork is completed in your maiden name or your new surname.
